Pandora is an interesting Goddess to get to know whether as "deity, archetype or ideal" (to borrow a phrase from Goddess Scholar, Karen Tate.) Her treatment over the years has caused confusion as to her Goddess status, but I like to view Pandora as a Universal Change Agent for the Betterment of All.
Pandora's status as deity is quite nebulous -- it depends on which stories you have chosen to believe--but as a Goddess, Pandora is quite generous! She offers her devotees opportunities for growth. The opportunities may at first appear to be challenges, but the beauty of the gift is there for those who approach them with open curiosity and a willingness to explore. Pandora especially loves to help her devotees through scandal and shame, helping them to see the light on the other side of an other-wise dark situation.
Pandora enjoys expressing her creativity -- don't box her in, there'll be hell to pay for that! -- and she can help you invoke your own innate creative powers. Her natural curiosity lends well to the cultivation of an adventurous spirit. Regardless of how she has been painted in recent history, Pandora offers up lessons of generosity. If you have ever felt the struggle of saying something difficult, or sharing negative feelings, you might try working with Pandora.
CHAKRA associations: Pandora is associated with the ROOT, SACRAL and THROAT chakras. She is of the element of EARTH and WATER (in one tale, she was said to be made from clay. Earlier tales say she is a Goddess of the Earth.) Pandora is also associated with FIRE.
MOON Energies: Because of her ambiguous origins, working with her energies is easy at any phase or stage of the moon. Invoke her child-like wonder at the maiden moon. Connect to her mothering qualities of abundance and gift giving at the full, mother moon. Release and detox with Pandora at the crone moon.
From an archetypal viewpoint, Pandora has both bright and shadow aspects. If you are doing any kind of shadow work in the following attributes, working with Pandora as an archetypal energy can help you to integrate these aspects of your self for wholeness.
Positive expression: Pandora teaches us to experience life with unwavering curiosity. She pushes us to face our fears. She nudges us in the direction of learning our true potential. She represents a child-like innocence. Earlier versions of Pandora say she is "all giving," making generosity another positive attribute of her archetypal energy. She reminds us to keep the hope alive. She is liberating, adventurous, ingenious.
Negative expression: Pandora represents exposing the skeletons in the closet, opening a can of worms, stirring the cauldron (so to speak...) She represents public humiliation, scandals, shameful secrets and controversy. Making thoughtless choices that hurt others. Lacking discernment and manners. Irrational, impatient and dangerously rebellious. She is the scapegoat.
Over to you: How would you work with the Goddess Pandora? If you have ever invoked the energies of Pandora in your practice or life, please share your experiences in the comments below!
