Last week when my friend Inanna asked me on her channel for an interview, we briefly touched on which crystals are safe to use as yoni eggs, but I want to talk a little bit more about it because I feel like this very important information. So, here's a couple of tips for you to consider when you decide to start your own yoni egg practice.
Is it supposed to be a yoni egg?
A lot of crystals are carved into the shape of an egg, but that doesn't make it a yoni egg. These are intended for decorative purposes, or magical purposes or whatever. Some may be dyed or irradiated to enhance the color, and/or go through an acid bath to give it a polished sheen. These eggs are not intended as yoni eggs and should not be used as such.
One way to differentiate: if your egg is drilled, it is supposed to be used as a yoni egg. If you don’t know, ask.
Now, having said that, not all yoni eggs are drilled. I do like to start with this guideline, however, because it is a quick and easy way to differentiate the decorative items from the feminine self care tool.
There are two schools of thought when it comes to using drilled eggs versus non drilled: I used to be of the school of thought that said don’t use strings on your yoni eggs. This was because I liked the idea that a non-drilled, non-stringed egg would force you to rely on your body wisdom, for one, and trust that your body would expel your egg when it was ready. But after coaching women on these stones and working with them for a year and half, I’ve come to believe that neither method is wrong and that it depends on YOUR comfort level.
Some women prefer to use drilled eggs simply because it gives them peace of mind knowing that when they are done with their exercises, they can simply pull the egg out and not have to worry about “digging” for it to get it out. The other school of thought is that using an undrilled egg helps women to deepen their intuition and actually go further in their journey to reconnect with their own body and deepening that trust of their body wisdom when it is done working the exercises. Like I said doesn't doesn't matter you can do it either way but I like to start with the “drilled egg” guideline because it is a simple way to know if your crystal is actually intended to be used as a yoni egg.
What is the crystal’s Mohs rating?
The Mohs scale of hardness is a rating scale to determine how hard your crystal, gemstone or mineral is. Anything below a 5 is considered soft and I don't recommend using stones under 6.5 as yoni eggs. For instance, selenite often comes beautifully carved in an egg shape, but I would never recommend you use it as a yoni stone because selenite is a 2 on the Mohs scale of hardness. It is water soluble, friable (which means it can break apart) and has a tendency to splinter off into shards. Obviously something you DON’T want in your hoo-ha.
Is your crystal raw or tumbled?
I don't recommend using raw crystals for yoni eggs. The biggest reason for this is because raw stones are more likely to bleed, prone to leeching and have no protective seal. When a crystal is tumbled, it creates a seal-like barrier so that those elemental compounds don't break off. always use a tumbled stone for your Yoni egg
What is the mineral composition of the Stone?
With literally thousands of crystals containing a mashup of different elemental/ mineral compounds, there's actually not one definitive list for toxic crystals, but the information over at Hibiscus Moon Crystal Academy is pretty reliable. She lists many of the most popular crystals awakened women are working with and so I think that it's a really good resource to use.
I want to caution, however, that just because the crystal is on the list, does not mean it is dangerous for you. For instance, labradorite is listed because it contains trace amounts of aluminum. Aluminum is a known toxin, but only when ingested orally. Also, a stone like Tiger’s Eye is on the list because it contains asbestos, which can be harmful in its FIBROUS form (and not as a solid, tumbled stone.) As Hibiscus Moon points out, many crystals are listed because they contain trace amounts (read: harmless) of the toxin. For instance, some that contain copper, but copper is not dangerous in trace amounts through dermal contact. After all, we handle copper pennies all day long. Always use judgement based on your intuition and sound research before choosing your crystal yoni egg.
What are safe handling guidelines for your specific crystal?
Knowing whether or not your crystal requires safe handling guidelines is important. Typically, any of the quartz family are going to be 100% safe to use (clear quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, citrine, etc…) as are your jaspers, obsidian and jade, for instance. The real dangers come when the stones are ground and create a dust that can be inhaled or exposed to liquid (as in the case of making a crystal elixir) to be ingested. As awakening women, it’s important to know how to handle your gemstones and crystals, so again, always do your research and trust your intuition.
