We were nomads once,
wild and free,
living off the charity of the land,
mother's good graces.
And then we discovered
we could get more if we toiled the land.
So we settled.
Cultivating the land, cultivating our minds.
Taming everything that reminded
us of how we used to be.
Wild and free.
Tracking the sun because
it rewarded our toil in the fields.
We stopped talking about the moon
and her nature.
We became afraid of the dark.
Tales of sun gods filled the darkness with...
We warred over which sun/son
god was more important.
Raised our children to believe in hard work,
to have a hearty work ethic.
We forgot to tell them
about the love and care
we got from
Because we didn't talk about it
(And we'd be quick to backhand them if they step out of line, acting like wild ones.)
the fields and
the work, and
the child rearing,
they tried to make it easier for us.
tracking the sun's path with square tables and grids.
We forgot about the moon,
her phases. Her stages. Her faces.
Her 13 round moons could not fit neatly
into their square calendars,
And so it was.
