Lunar astrology tracks the moon’s course through the zodiac. In astrology, the moon rules our inner landscape, including emotions and the realms of our subconscious.
Just like the moon itself, lunar astrology is fickle and complex. Moon sign meanings can change depending on the phase of the moon. For instance, the full moon in Capricorn enhances one's need for structure and tradition in order to feel secure. However, a dark moon in Capricorn encourages one to let go of traditions that no longer make sense.
Sun sign meanings are pretty straight-forward, with only twelve archetypal patterns that play out each year as the sun passes through each sign of the zodiac. But the moon (with its eight phases) orchestrates 96 different archetypal patterns that play out in any given year.
The moon moves through the zodiac much more quickly than all the other celestial bodies, and spends roughly 2.5 days in each zodiac sign. The most auspicious times for manifesting with the moon occur when the sun, moon and earth are all in alignment.
Moon Phase Meanings:
NEW MOON- Liminal Stage. 0% illuminated. Conjunct sun.
The moon is dark, but has shifted into complete alignment with the sun. This means that both the sun and the moon are working together in the same zodiac sign, so the themes of this archetypal energy will dominate throughout the entire moon cycle (even though the moon transits all twelve signs in a lunar cycle.) It is a period of seeding intentions, the fertile ground for growing new dreams. It is a period of awakening to new ideas, new dreams, new goals. Whatever emotions one holds at this phase will set the energetic course for the rest of the cycle.
WAXING CRESCENT- 1 - 49 % illuminated.
The spark of creative force ignites here. This is when the moon makes its first appearance in the sky and continues to grow into a fat crescent, not quite a teeny sliver, but not quite half lit, either. It is when constructive energies emerge; when ideas really start to take shape; when passion for the idea swells. Also known as the maiden moon.
FIRST QUARTER- 50% illuminated.
During this phase, the moon appears as a half-lit coin in the sky. It is a period of growing energy that is still a bit raw and excitable. It represents the internal conflict, doubts or fears that could derail your goals. Patience is your friend now. Continue to hold the vision.
WAXING GIBBOUS- 51 -99% illuminated.
The moon is more than half-lit, but less than full. The energy continues to build, and this period is a real test of your patience. Use these energies to fine tune your frequency and continue feeling into your wants.
FULL-Liminal Stage. 100% illuminated. Opposite sun.
The Full Moon is in direct opposition to the sun at this point. The moon illuminates our inner landscape and the energies present at this time enhance our emotions. In moon magic, this is the time that the growing energy reaches its apex and we turn a corner. Also known as the mother moon, as the full moon is pregnant with possibility and delivers!
DISSEMINATING- 99 - 51% illuminated.
The moon is more than half-lit again, but it is dimming on the side that was, for the past two weeks, growing in illumination. Use the energies of this time to detach and ground your intentions firmly into place.
LAST QUARTER- 50% illuminated.
Again, the moon appears as a half-lit coin in the sky, continuing to dim its light. The energy here represents external crisis -- those things beyond your control that may present a challenge to you in achieving your goals. The energy continues to recede.
BALSAMIC MOON- 49 - 2% illuminated.
The moon continues to recede in size and light, a tiny crescent once again. This moon is also known as the Crone moon, the destructive force of creativity, and is a time of low personal energy. Best used for releasing fears, shedding masks and for a quiet, personal retreat.
****DARK MOON- Liminal Stage. 1% illuminated
The day before the new moon, before the moon is conjunct the sun. The moon is now completely dark and this is a period of rest. A lot of work is done here, even if we can not see it happening. Trust in the process. There is nothing left to do; all is as it should be. Some will use the energy to purify, space cleanse and/or detox during this time.
(****New Moon/Dark Moon. This is a topic that is hotly debated, and I would like to add my personal observations here. Some talk of the new moon and the dark moon as being one and the same, but I personally feel a distinct difference between the energies of the dark moon and the new moon.
