I marched today in the largest single-day protest in history. I joined millions of others across the globe to stand up for equality, human rights, social justice, environmental justice, economic justice...but who am I kidding? There was nothing altruistic about this.
I marched today for you, beautiful baby, and for your cousins, and for our future generations to come.
I marched today because I wanted to protect and preserve the liberties we are guaranteed as Americans-- the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
I marched today because I want to ensure that you will never, ever, ever have to know a world in which, by virtue of being born a girl, you would not have the right to VOTE, or the right to govern your own body; the right to make an honest living or create an honest life; the right to open a checking account, to obtain a credit card, to buy a house, to own real property -- or any property--or make your own financial decisions.
I marched because there was a time it was illegal for a woman to any or all of these things (and for some of these things, that time was less than 50 years ago!)
I marched today because you deserve to live in a world that will not shame you for asking for help when you need it, whether that help comes from your family, your community or from your government.
I marched today because there is a saying that goes, “water rises to its own level.” I thank the Goddess that the tide is rising, and soon, women every where will join together and remember what it means to be truly wild and free.
I marched today to put a stop to the unconscious transference of our foremothers’ unfinished business. I marched so you no longer have to blindly accept the inheritance of wounds that have been passed down our matriarchal line for generations: The unspoken, but mysteriously understood, agreements we must uphold. The burdens of ancestral shame we must shoulder. The pain we must carry as our own, with scars so deep, we can’t even pinpoint where the transgression began.
I marched today because I know if I don’t raise my voice now, there is a risk you won’t be able to raise yours when you need to.
I marched today for us.
I marched today for you.
