Last month, when I was dreaming up what to share on the blog for July, I got excited about creating an Etsy roundup featuring Goddess-centric shops. But then rumors swept the interwebs claiming that Etsy, my favorite marketplace for buying and selling eclectic, vintage and one-of-a-kind artisan wares, had suspended shops that sold metaphysical items!
This was disturbing because I've had a long and very loving relationship with Etsy over the years. (I've been a seller there since January 3, 2010 and in 2011, Etsy helped me pay for two separate trips to Europe! )
The seller forums erupted in chaos as people speculated on the seeming discrimination. Someone even posted a thread about how just a few months ago, Etsy became a publicly traded corporation on the stock market. It did seem very suspicious! Was Etsy snubbing its sellers in favor of its new(er) stake holders?
But I was determined to give Etsy the benefit of doubt, and instead of caving to the rumor mill and taking my shop elsewhere, I sent an email to Etsy support requesting clarification on the definition of "metaphyscial items" and its policies around such things.
I was soothed with a response explaining that as long as shop owners provide a tangible item (a pdf, video or email of our tarot readings, for example), we can continue to sell our goods.
My friend, Evyn (who is a long-time and well-respected Etsy proprietor) had this to say about the hoolabaloo:
When I first heard the rumors that Etsy was going to ban all metaphysical items, I felt frustrated and concerned, as my shop is my family’s only livelihood. I was very surprised by this, as I have been an Etsy seller for years and have always absolutely loved the open, community-based and positive platform for my shop...
So, in a nutshell, I think many of us agree that, despite it's lack of a sound communications strategy around this policy, Etsy is still a great forum for "metaphysical niche-market" internet entrepreneurs and DIYers.
Aaaaand...without further ado, here is that roundup of Aquarius-Blue-Moon-inspired Etsy Finds I curated to help you tap into the energies of this auspicious lunar event on July 31!
