Eclipse Season is officially here the trumpets of change are heralding! Not to be apocalyptic, I just couldn’t help it! If you haven’t been paying attention, these supercharged events are sure to shake things up! But seriously, on August 7, the Full Moon (Lunar) Eclipse occurs at 15° Aquarius followed by the New Moon and Solar Eclipse on August 21 at 28° Leo.
What Is An Eclipse?
In ancient times, it was believed the earth was surrounded by a dragon who swallowed the sun or moon during an eclipse, thus the nodes came to be known as the “Dragon Head” (North Node) and the “Dragon’s Tail” (South Node). Eclipses were thought to bring with them news that often lead to changes, especially in relation to royalty or rulership.
Today, we know eclipses occur when the new or full moon is within 18° of the nodes of the moon. The nodes are not planets, but points in space where the apparent paths of the sun and the moon cross. The closer these luminaries are to the nodes, the more complete the eclipse is.
Eclipses occur in pairs. A solar eclipse occurs on a new moon, when the moon blocks the light of the sun from reaching earth.
A lunar eclipse occurs on a full moon, when the earth blocks the light of the sun from reaching the moon.
The nodes transit retrograde through the zodiac on an axis (the South Node is always exactly opposite the North Node). Because eclipses occur in pairs, they typically correspond to the signs in which the nodes occupy, though it is possible an eclipse will be in adjacent sign if the node is at an early or late degree of the sign. For instance, the Leo lunar eclipse of February 10th was followed by a Pisces Solar eclipse on February 26th earlier this year. The nodal axis was preparing to shift from Virgo/ Pisces into Leo/Aquarius.
Because there are usually four - six eclipses in one year, the eclipses will occur in this family of signs every 5.5 months for 18 months. Once it completes that cycle, it will take about 8 years for the eclipse to happen in that family of signs again.
Symbolic Meaning of Eclipses
When an eclipse occurs, it represents a turning point in one’s life-- a letting go of the old and an ushering in of the new. These are considered fated events that lead to one’s soul evolution.
The nodes of the moon represent our past and our future-- what we already know and have integrated (the South Node) vs what we are learning and developing (the North Node). The themes of which lessons we are here to work on are determined by the signs in which the respective nodes occupy.
This symbolism describes your own path to fulfillment in this lifetime-- look to your natal chart to see which signs and houses your Nodal Axis occupies. The houses will tell you where (the areas of life) you are learning these lessons and the sign will tell you how (the expression) the lessons will come through.
Because the transits of the sun (ego) and the moon (subconscious) are the triggering factors, an eclipse activates profound changes within. The years in which eclipses occur in your rising sign, your sun sign, your moon sign or within your natal nodal axis signs can signal important changes for you. If you have Leo or Aquarius energy at any of these points, be prepared to experience transformations in the coming months!
Your Eclipse Survival Guide
1) Ground yourself
Because eclipses are symbols of transformation, they are often met with anxiety. There seems to be a general, collective anxiety around the upcoming Leo New Moon and Solar Eclipse (at least here in the States) because it cuts a path from coast to coast across the Continental US. It is said the country an eclipse touches will experience profound changes. Who is to say what kind of change is coming, really, but it helps to remember the axiom that the only constant in life is….change.
If you are feeling swept up in the chaos of this eclipse season, let your breath stabilize you in your “here and now.” Focus on what you do know, on what you can control. Bring your attention to your breath. Feel the air and prana flowing into your lungs, energizing your limbs and moving energy within. Feel the stability of being present. Deep breaths are like love notes to your body.
2) Tying up loose ends…
The upcoming Aquarius Lunar Eclipse on August 7 is happening next to the South Node, which represents the past. This may mean different things for different people, but the general sense here is that it’s time to say goodbye to outmoded ideas, long-expired social conventions, and even stale relationships.
Aquarius is associated with society, friends, associates, networks -- if you have been hanging on to an old relationship that feels stale, perhaps now is the time for cutting cords. It may be time to look at your networks, social clubs, groups or associations that feel out of alignment with your soul, that no longer resonate with your sense of purpose.
3) Be Open to News, Ideas and Information
Eclipses often bring with them news of transformation, and because Aquarius (an air sign) is associated with the realms of ideas, this event will likely produce a lot of news. Allow yourself to receive information, critique, suggestions. You don’t have to act on any of it (in fact, I recommend you don’t just yet...see below) but do add it to your list of considerations for what may need to transform in your own life.
4) Full Moons Illuminate -- Eclipses Shadow
Aquarius is known as the Revolutionary, and the more shadowy side is the Rebel. What do you rebel against? Where are you leading others into revolution? How is this serving you? If it does not serve your purpose -- if you are a rebel without a cause -- you may consider getting a new perspective.
An eclipse can help as they are like “reset” buttons.
Think of how the shadow slowly passes over the light of the moon, encompassing it fully and then gradually reveals the luminary again.
One way to work with this energy is to watch the passage of shadow stretching across the moon. If you can’t physically see the eclipse, then visualize it.
As you visualize the Earth’s shadow encroaching upon the moon, allow the patterns, behaviors, thoughts, fears come up from within. Know that you are perfectly safe as you do so. Just be an observer to the event, noting with objective curiosity the sensations, thoughts and feelings that want to be revealed.
Make note of these, jotting them down on paper if you wish.
As the moon is revealed again, set the intention that you are releasing these patterns, recalibrating with higher intentions.
If you have made notes on paper, roll the paper like a scroll and tie it with a red or silver thread. On the solar eclipse burn this paper.
5) Don’t Take Action Just Yet
During eclipse season, you may receive news information that triggers necessary changes in your life. The key is to be receptive to the news that is coming during this time but wait to take action when things have stabilized. I suggest waiting until the moon is in a more grounded sign, like Virgo or Taurus, for example.
6) Invoke Balance in Your Personal Leo/Aquarius Axis
Finally, notice where your inner Aquarius or inner Leo are out of balance and use this time to reset yourself. Even if you have no planets or points in the sign of Aquarius/Leo in your natal chart, this energy is still active in your life. It is being triggered right now, for instance, by the eclipses.
